Mullein Torches

Finally, after an arduous harvest, we will be able to offer to you some decent-sized mullein torches dipped in pure beeswax and pine resin.

Mullein torches or hag’s tapers are made with mullein (Verbascum thapsus) stalks, and have been used in funerary rituals since ancient times in the making of funale or fax.

In Latin, mullein was known as nekua, phlomos, or more widely, Candela regia or Candelaria, probably after Rembert Dodoens, who claimed it was used in the making of tapers or torches. This usage is repeated in the Theatrum botanicum by John Parkinson: “stalks dipped in suet to burn at funerals or otherwise.”

Mullein is also regarded as a protective plant. As it is said in the Old English Herbarium, “If anyone carries with him even one twig of this plant, no terror will frighten him, no wild beast will scare him, nor will any evil approach him.”

Light them when you need a special light in Darkness. Crafted with funerary rites, protective sorcery, and Ancestor work in mind. 

Burn them outdoors, and never leave them unattended.

• Large: more than 50 cm (more than 20 inches)

Por fin, tras una ardua cosecha, podremos ofreceros unas antorchas de gordolobo de tamaño decente bañadas en cera de abeja y resina de pino.

Las antorchas de gordolobo se elaboran con tallos de gordolobo (Verbascum thapsus), y se han utilizado en rituales funerarios desde la antigüedad en la elaboración de funale o fax.

En latín, el gordolobo era conocido como nekua, phlomos, o más comúnmente, Candela regia o Candelaria, probablemente por Rembert Dodoens, que afirmaba que se utilizaba en la fabricación de velas o antorchas. Este uso se repite en el Theatrum botanicum de John Parkinson: "tallos sumergidos en sebo para quemar en los funerales o de otra manera".

El gordolobo también se considera una planta protectora. Como se dice en el Old English Herbarium: "Si alguien lleva consigo aunque sea una ramita de esta planta, ningún terror lo asustará, ninguna bestia salvaje lo asustará, ni ningún mal se le acercará".
