The Garden of Persephone
Katabasis and the arrival of spring in western herbalism
Persephone emerges from the shadows of myth often overlooked as a passive deity. Yet, she defies simplistic labels, transcending her roles as the daughter of Demeter and consort of Hades. Persephone embodies the essence of paradox: she is the harbinger of death and the transgressor of taboo, the embodiment of mystery itself, weaving the threads of spring's renewal and the descent into the underworld. Yet, her presence extends far beyond these realms. The story of her abduction and eventual reign in the underworld echoes through the corridors of our collective consciousness, leaving an indelible mark on culture, symbolism, and mythos.
This course delves deep into the mysteries surrounding Persephone and her entwining with plant-lore. As the ambassador of springtime and the gatherer of the narcotic Key, she holds sway over the verdant realm, she is the re-generator. We will uncover the interpretations of the plants associated with her descent, revealing their applications and correspondences in folklore. From the symbolism of flower garlands to corn maidens, we unravel the rich tapestry of Persephone's botanical realm, a garden tended with the tears and blood of sacrifice.
